WRITING
Thani has been writing for as long as they can remember — in elementary school when asked what they wanted to be when they grew up, they would say “a poet”. So every birthday present from then on was a journal!
Thani is currently working on their first album, drawing inspiration from Joni Mitchell, Anaïs Mitchell, Alanis Morissette, Hayley Williams, and other folk and rock artists.
Thani began composing for musical theatre while studying at the University of Michigan under the guidance of Professor Lynne Shankel, and graduated with a Minor in Musical Theatre Composition . They hope to use their unique voice as a queer, trans, biracial writer to create space in musical theatre for intersectional identities and underrepresented stories.
THE LAUGH OF THE MEDUSA
In the ancient time of myth, Medusa prays to the goddess Athena for a new physical form. Meanwhile, thousands of years in the future, a student in their college dorm room sings a similar prayer to the universe. On one fateful night, their prayers converge, bringing their two worlds together. Through a relationship that spans years, they help each other break free of ancient cycles of violence.
THE LAUGH OF THE MEDUSA is a trans coming-of-age musical with a folk-rock score that speaks urgently to the ever-threatening violence of empire, and the power of people, specifically artists, to forge a path forward.
